Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 30–45 m tall.

Stems: Bark reddish brown, brown, or gray, fibrous throughout.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades broadly lanceolate, 10–17 cm long, 1.8–3.5 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades discolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 15–30 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 7–11 in axillary, simple umbels, peduncles flattened, 10–22 mm long, pedicels 3–10 mm long. buds rostrate, 14–17 mm long, 5–7 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum conical or rostrate. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovules with axile placentation.

Fruit: Fruit hemispherical or obconical; 6–11 mm long; 7–10 mm wide; valves 3–4; exserted. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Planted on O'ahu; Maui; and Hawai'i; and regenerating from seed in these areas.
